The Maine Coon has the grace of a wild cat !
An imposing stature, a powerful musculature, a supple and racy gait, a long soft and silky fur, a piercing gaze and large ears prolonged by long plumes… This wonder of nature is the largest of all purebred cats.
The females, smaller than the males, weigh 3.5 to 6 kg, as for the males, if they weigh on average 7.5 kg some individuals reach 10 kg around 4 to 5 years old, but it is important not to that they are " fat "!
Despite his lynx appearance and wild eyes, the Maine Coon is a very balanced, calm, gentle, very affectionate cat even with children (who can handle him without overreacting). He is attached to his owners and also very sociable both with strangers and with other animals.
HIS HISTORY :
The Maine Coon breed is a natural breed, there are still subjects in the wild in the remote forests of northern America. He is a rustic cat with solid health (he only sees his veterinarian for the annual vaccination). This breed has not undergone any crossbreeding with other breeds to modify it. That is to say that the evolution of the type (larger ears, longer nose, longer tail) is the result of a long selection work on the part of the breeders, without ever cheating by bringing an element of 'another race to facilitate the evolution of such and such a point.
The Maine Coon made its first public appearance in the mid-19th century in the USA, during an agricultural competition, a farmer having decided to present the big cat she had tamed. He can also claim the title of " America's first purebred cat »Since it was included in the very first cat shows in 1860.
At the base wild cat, the farmers very quickly sought to domesticate it to take advantage of its hunting talents… It eliminated the rats which threatened their harvests.
LEGENDS ...
The Maine Coon has still not revealed the secret of its origins and legends continue to circulate about it.
The most eccentric being the story of a marriage between a wild cat and a raccoon, an animal from which he inherited the name, Maine coon being the concatenation of Maine (its original state) and Racoon (raccoon) and literally meaning " nutria from Maine ". But genetics have now proven that this is impossible.
Another version (to which the French are very attached) claims that at the time of the French Revolution Marie Antoinette, sensing the danger, would have entrusted her Angora cats (from Persia and Turkey) to General La Fayette.
Landed on American soil they would have sunk into the forests and the Maine coons would be the descendants of these cats (crossed with wild cats of the country) ...
The most probable thesis suggests that they are the descendants of long-haired cats who arrived aboard Viking ships (probably angoras brought back from Persia and Turkey). Some of his cats preferring to discover new territories rather than redo the trip by boat. They would have reproduced with wild cats and the strongest of their descendants would have adapted to the harsh North American climate and thus would have given birth to the Maine Coon.
We can also assume that the Norwegian Forest Cat (which the neophyte easily confuses with the Maine Coon) has a substantially identical history. The Vikings having brought home the famous half-long haired cats who crossed with the wild cats of Scandinavia ...
DESCRIPTION :
Its body is long and rectangular, its tail should be as long as its body, its ears are large and set high on the head. This head should give the impression of two glued cubes (one cube for the head, a second for the muzzle).
Its fur is of unequal length and gradually elongates on the back and the sides, but the crop is well supplied and the winter the " collar Is impressive. Despite a mid-length hair, a weekly brushing is sufficient for the maintenance of its coat (except during the moulting period) and a bath 3 to 4 times a year will give shape to its hair.
Mïa Des Rêves d'Azuli
All the colors of Maine Coon come from wild subjects, even if they are mostly brown or black (those which camouflage themselves best and therefore survive more easily in the wild), reds, blues, silvers, whites … Also exist. The only ones " dresses "Which do not exist in the Maine coon are the patterns" color point "(Siamese motif) and" ticked »(Abyssinian motif) and the colors Cinnamon, fawn, chocolate and lilac.
BEHVIOUR :
The Maine Coon loves to have company, he follows his master from one room to another of the house.
He has a reputation of " cat dog " because it is one of the rare cats bringing back the objects which one throws at it. Americans call it too " singing cat ", that is to say " the singing cat " because of his very melodious meow.
Apartment life suits him very well, but he is an athlete who needs to exercise : a large, solid scratching post is essential.
The Maine coon also has the particularity of " play with your water »And to wash his mice there… He therefore needs a very heavy and stable bowl. !
It has, on the other hand, adapted very well to food in croquettes, but you must not leave the bowl of croquettes too close to the bowl of water, they could well go for a little dip. !!!
